Vietnam's high tariff on automobile imports, absence of public transit options, low per capita incomes, and the compact, traditional nature of its urban development make the motorbike an essential means of transportation. These factors also mean packing the whole family (and pets) onto the family bike - safety takes a back seat.

Dating back to the 8th century, Seokguram Grotto, part of the Bulguksa temple complex, is an artificial granite cave containing a 3.5 m high sculpture of Buddha surrounded by portrayals of gods, Bodhisattvas and disciples. Overlooking the Sea of Japan, it is considered a masterpiece in East Asian Buddhist Art.
