In-depth essays on Tea

This book contains 10 essays on the subject of tea in Japan by a number of well known scholars, both Japanese and from the west. For those interested in acquiring intellectual and historical background on tea, this is a useful book, and the perspectives are interesting: tea before Rikyu, the early Europeans and tea, the historical significance of tea, and essay by tea master Sen Soshitsu XV. However, the book dates from 1982, and is quite in depth; I would not recommend the essays for any but college level readers, and even then, the essays are specific and narrow in scope.
