The lesson “Trade and the Economy in Ancient China” is a good lesson that connects the past to the present. This lesson is suitable for middle school (6-8). The lesson can also be adapted for elementary or high school classes. The lesson is detailed to discuss the interdependence of areas through economics. The lesson begins with current economic interdependence which is used to help explain interdependence on the Silk Road. The lesson requires students to analyze maps of the Silk Road. The culminating activity has the students creating a Silk Road map to visualize their understanding of the complex trade system. Overall, this lesson shows students the interdependence of civilizations and nations concerning goods and ideas.
