Like the book, Guns, Germs and Steel traces humanity’s journey over the last 13,000 years – from the dawn of farming at the end of the last Ice Age to the realities of life in the twenty-first century. However, the captivating imagery and quick-pace keep the viewer engaged and as these three one-hour programs were filmed across four continents on High Definition digital video. This combined ambitious dramatic reconstruction with moving documentary footage and computer animation will likely keep those "pesky" disinterested students on the edge of their seats. I would recommend that the educator read the book first, and then consider how the video can be used in conjunction with the text. Not surprisingly, the video may be more engaging for lower ability students or students for whom visual stimulation is a must. Simply put, students will find Guns, Germs, and Steel a thrilling ride through the elemental forces which have shaped our world – and which continue to shape our future.
