Cemetery in Mt. Koya, Japan

The Okunion Cemetery, the largest in Japan, is over a mile's walk in Mt. Koya. This image is just one small glimpse of the over 200,000 tombstones. At the end of the cemetery is where Kukai's mausoleum is located. Mt. Koya was founded by Kukai, who, in search of Buddhist teachings, founded the Shingon school of Buddhism. He had a large following and many wanted to be buried near his mausoleum.
