Abstract
Author Peter Carey notices his 12-year-old son has recently taken an interest in Japanese culture, particularly art, anime, and manga. In order to learn more about his son and the phenomena of anime and manga, he takes his son on a trip to Japan. Arriving in a tokonoma in the Asakusa district of Tokyo, Carey takes his son to meet manga creators and the modern Japan that isn’t revealed in the history books. Coming into contact with some of the definitive manga and anime artists of the last 30 years, Carey reveals the relationship the more modern Japan has with its past, such as the art of the sword and the dropping of the atomic bomb. Carey’s travels with his son not only reveals certain aspects of Japan many of us may not be familiar with and introduce us to the finer points of its popular culture, but also reveal the relationships adults have with a younger generation and how both the young and old are able to learn from each other.
