Blind Shaft

Synopsis
In modern Northwestern China, itinerant coal miners Tang and Song place a cash price on human life in a world where humanity has been deemed utterly worthless. The two homicidal grifters perversely turn the tables on a corrupt system of unregulated mines and negligent owners by befriending fellow minders, murdering them in staged "accidents," then passing their victims off as relatives in order to pocket their employer’s hush money. But Tang and Song’s ironic crime wave threatens to self-destruct after they recruit Feng, a naive young farm boy. Though merely fresh meat to Tang, Feng awakens long dormant sentiments in Song that threaten to drive a wedge between the two killers. Together, the three men’s journey becomes a treacherous on-way descent into nerve shattering confrontation and brutally poetic justice. (Amazon)

Blind Shaft was set in China and filmed in 2004. The movie appears to be in a cold and industrial part of China, implying it took place during Socialist time. The plot starts with two gentleman who are professional crooks and convince an unknowing third gentleman to come and work with them as their missing relative. The movie plots intensifies with an open shot of an elevator descending into a coal mine. Once inside the coal mine, you see “friends” talking and having casual conversation. Suddenly, the unsuspecting gentleman is killed by the two crooks who then cause a collapse of the mine forcing everyone to flee. Making the murder look like a mishap, the partners in crime negotiate with the mine owner for a pay out of his supposed “brother”. The mine owner would rather pay off the crooks than call the police and have the murder investigated.
Obtaining a significant pay off, the crooks spend money on the finer things in life. Once their money runs out, they recruit another unsuspecting young man who is looking for work to support his family. They take him under their wings and convince him they can find him work if the young man comes with him. The two crooks make plans to repeat the same murder scheme for another pay off.
Once working at a new mine, one of the crooks begins to have second thoughts. He see the innocence in the young man and does not go along with the murder plan. There is an altercation between the two crooks and they both fall down from hits to the head. The young man, who is frightened and confused, runs from the mine and the all clear whistle is blow indicating everyone is out of the mine. When explosives detonate in the shaft, the two crooks are killed and the young man collects a significant pay off on their behalf.
