Curriculum Review – Guide for Teaching Ancient China
Y. Ming Rui
Chinese teacher for 6-12th grades
Winchester Thurston School
Appropriate for grade levels: 6 and up
China has a long history and complicated writing systems. For many, teaching about China could be a daunting task in general; teaching the Chinese culture, history and religion/philosophies could be even more intimidating for many language teachers. This curriculum showed teachers of different disciplines a way to teach about China organized by strands such as geography, government, economics, history, and, even mathematics. It provided simple, detailed, yet dynamic ways to teach about China.
The curriculum is suitable for middle school and high school students. It included many interesting activities and graphs to help engage students. It had many saying, proverbs, poems translated into English. I wish that the curriculum would have also included the original Chinese texts along with the translation for language teachers. It is a good resource book if teachers don’t want to follow the lesson plans closely.
