Abstract
"Students examine primary source documents (political cartoons, legislation, statistics, poems, letters) to understand both popular sentiment and the local and national policies that excluded early Chinese immigrants from mainstream society in the late 19th century. These lessons address whether Chinese laborers should have remained in the U.S. or returned to China, who favored exclusion, and how Chinese immigrants coped with discrimination. Grades 8-12."
