Abstract |
The story is a myth built around the Magic White Deer that is painted on the murals at Dunhuang. Magic Deer helps and protects all those that he can. His virtuous and kind nature impresses many people and makes him a hero among all the humans and animals. One day though, he saves a snake charmer and an envoy of traders. After Magic Deer saves the snake charmer, the envoy of traders tells the king about Magic Deer, making the queen desirous of Magic Deer’s pelt for a coat. The Snake Charmer hears of this and reneges on his promise to Magic Deer to always protect him. While the lesson at the end seems rushed and trite, the story as a whole is enjoyable and the animation stills on every page are nice to look at. Ages 4 & Up.
