Look What Came from Japan

Author
Abstract
Grade 2-5-Even in the face of all the series that look at the culture and people of various countries, these books offer a breath of fresh air with their light and humorous tone. Each one looks at "cool stuff that comes from..." that particular country in the fields of the arts, food, fashion, toys and games, sports, crafts, etc. The emphasis is determined by the country; as a result, food and kitchen stuff get more coverage in France, while toys and crafts are included in Japan. Large, colorful photographs dominate each self-contained, double-page spread. Pictures of currency and food are combined with pictures of inventions, crafts, animals, etc. A childlike drawing of the country introduces each overview. At times, the content is a bit uneven, e.g., there is a description of borscht but not chicken Kiev (Russia). However, while the information is brief, it is interesting and engaging. Each book includes a recipe, a few words with pronunciation guides, and where to find more information. Attractive additions for students looking to learn about the world around them. (Amazon.com)
